APPLICATIONS ARE PERMANENTLY CLOSED
Daybreak Academy is now over, and has been converted into an AU sandbox/dressing room setting. It ran from January 2019 and ended in March 2021.
This page remains as an archive of applicants and its former state as a RP game.
If returning with an old character, feel free to reuse your old apps, though we ask that you elaborate on what they've been doing in their absence in their history.
Welcome to Daybreak Academy's applications page. Make sure that you have read through our FAQs and Taken pages before applying. Applications are always open, unless stated otherwise.
- ► Daybreak Academy is an Alternate Universe game. All characters being applied into the game must create an AU background to fit into the established setting.
► Original Characters are permitted in Daybreak Academy, but they must be designed to fit the setting.
► All applications will be processed within 72 hours of receipt, on a first-come-first-serve basis.
► Players can have up to 3 characters in the game.
► Applicants have the option to provide sample thread(s) with their applications, or answering 10 questions from the IC Interview Questionnaire.
► Being an AU game, canon-point isn't required for the app. It is generally recommended that student characters be modeled after earlier points in their personal canon and faculty characters be modeled after mid-or-late canon when appropriate.
► No player may play more than 1 faculty member at a time.
FOR CURRENT PLAYERS: POWER UPDATING
► Keep track of where your initial application comment for each character is! It can be used as a toplevel comment to submit power updates for mod approval.
Always use this comment first to make any clarifications or updates to your character's abilities.
► If you are using powers that have been established by other players, please discuss it with those players first and get approval/permission before submitting it as a power upgrade.

Desidera Neroni | Original Character
NAME: Espilan
CONTACT:
OTHER CHARACTER(S) IN GAME: not applicableCANON INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Desidera
CANON: Original Canon
HISTORY: Irrelevant; while a 'canon' version of Desidera does exist, her AU self is an entirely new character.STRENGTHS:
■ Friendly: Though it's mostly due to her having had very little contact with anyone, Desidera has a fairly strong interest in meeting new people, and wants to try to make friends out of those that appear to be open to doing so. She'll try her best to be someone that people would want to be around, and will generally be polite, considerate, and overall just good to anyone that isn't put off by her Daemonic traits. She won't allow herself to be a total doormat, though, and will draw lines where necessary.
■ Interested in Learning: Another result of her previously-sheltered life is that Desidera doesn't actually know a whole lot outside of the things that are most-relevant to her on a personal level. She's fortunately quite open to new experiences and learning new things, and will approach both with an enthusiasm that some might consider rare. The teachers might love her for it.
■ Trustworthy: For more than a few reasons, Desidera feels that keeping some secrets is important and will do whatever she can to protect any that might be entrusted to her, and she will generally not pry into any others. Additionally, if she makes a promise or otherwise agrees to something, she will hold herself to that promise or agreement as long as she is able, even if she ends up disagreeing with that same decision later on. While this is a strength of hers, it could be considered a weakness as well, as those secrets, promises and agreements can lead to making bad decisions or otherwise impede her in other areas.
FLAWS:
■ Ignorant: Desidera's interest in learning, while mentioned above as a 'Strength', is also basically a weakness as it is indicative of her having a limited understanding of the way the rest of the world works. She knows how things work for Mages, and she is way more than familiar with how Daemons work than she honestly has any right to be at her age, as both of those things are very relevant to her, but basically everything else is all pretty foreign to her. Expect the occasional stupid questions and misunderstandings, and for her to be kind of annoying in some ways as a result.
■ Holds Grudges: While she will try her hardest to not be upset by things, sometimes things will just get to her; her circumstances in particular are a touchy subject, so giving her any real trouble over what she is will get one of the fastest responses in this regard. When things do get to her, she has trouble letting go of it; anyone who has gotten onto her bad side will likely be staying there for awhile. It is also very easy to tell when someone has offended or otherwise wronged her, as she tends to act very coldly to them, in a stark contrast to her normal outward behavior. (Notably, while she maintains that she loves her mother, Desidera will often show this same cold behavior if or when the subject of her mother is brought up.) In some particularly severe cases, her response to being offended or wronged may be dangerous in that she will want to harm the offending party in some way.
■ Depressed: While Desidera will often be generally pleasant and seem like she has herself together, she actually rather hates her life; she hates how she was born the way she was, she hates how she was so sheltered because of it even if she was told that it was for her safety, and she certainly hates the idea that the Daemon that her mother had contracted might someday come for her. She doesn't openly discuss it, but anyone observant enough will see signs of it, and anyone she trusts well enough can probably get her to talk about it in private. (It's actually another part of the reason she's so interested in meeting people and making friends: she wants to find reasons not to hate her life.)

AU CHARACTER NAME: Desidera Neroni
AGE: 16 years
GRADE: 10th
AU BACKSTORY:
■ Desidera was born as the only child of Marise Neroni, a woman in a lesser-known Mage family. Due to a poor decision made by her mother one year prior to her birth—in which the woman had contracted a Daemon in a bid for more power, but had seemingly gained nothing—Desidera was born as something somewhere between Human and Daemon.
■ Out of concern that Desidera's Daemonic traits would mark her as a target for Hunters or other Mage families, Marise raised her largely in secret, tutoring the girl as best as she could, mostly in the sorts of magic that their family most-frequently used, but also making sure to teach her how to read, write, and so on.
■ Occasionally, other members of the family would pay a visit to assist in the tutoring, but these visits became consistently less-frequent as Desidera grew, until they stopped entirely after her tenth birthday. The reason that was given for these visits stopping was that there was no longer time for them with there being other matters that needed to be addressed, though what these particular matters were, they would not say. Though this is unknown to both Marise and Desidera, the rest of the family considers Desidera to be too dangerous to let live, but isn't acting on this thought...yet.
■ Shortly after her sixteenth birthday, Desidera began exhibiting more Daemonic traits than just the superficial, starting during an incident in which a small party of Mages from outside the family had broken into their home but were driven off (but not killed) by Desidera in a display that made it clear that she was gaining (or, it was more likely, already had gained) the strength and power of a minor Daemon, along with a tendency toward violence when she was sufficiently angered or felt threatened.
■ Unsure of how to properly deal with this development (or if a 'proper' way to deal with it exists at all), Marise soon opted to bring Desidera to Daybreak Academy, explaining her circumstances and asking if anyone among the faculty would be willing or able to teach the girl what she could not. Though she was still largely unaware of her own family's opinion of Desidera, she also had growing concerns that the Daemon she had contracted might eventually come for the girl, and so the request wasn't only for someone capable of teaching her, but also to protect her.
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: not applicableRACE: Human, with some Daemonic traits as a result of her mother's contract.
SECRET SOCIETY: Desidera is the daughter of a Mage. The particular family she's part of, like many others, seeks to increase its power for the purpose of eventually clawing its way to the top of Mage society as a whole. Though she does currently still identify herself as being a member of the family (and even if she didn't, the tattoo on her right arm would), Desidera couldn't give half a damn about any continued efforts toward that end, and in fact considers herself a casualty of said efforts, wishing to eventually distance herself from them. She is unaware that most of the family sees her as too dangerous.
POWERS:
■ Magic: As the child of a Mage family, Desidera was taught how to use magic, but she has very little in the way of practical experience. She has a predisposition toward basically anything that can be used to destroy, possibly due to the Daemon stuff going on with her, and so her focus has primarily been on the more-offensive varieties of magic with a particular emphasis on anything involving fire or shadows. The Daemonic power that she was born with as a result of her mother's contract makes her magic that much more dangerous. She does have an active interest in other kinds of magic and would be willing to try to learn if provided an opportunity.
■ Uncommon Strength: Desidera is physically stronger than the average human, to a noticeable degree, but not to any particularly absurd level; she can handle lifting a couple hundred pounds without too much difficulty (but will have trouble with anything more than that), and in a fight any physical blows from her tend to be fairly damaging, with the potential to be devastating if she puts everything she has into it.

MORE INFO: "MALVARMA"
Malvarma is a centuries-old Daemon, relatively young compared to some others, that takes the appearance of a slender girl with pale skin, long white hair, pointed ears, piercing blue eyes, and a pair of horns that reach just past the top of her head (looking quite a bit like Desidera, actually, except with the opposite colors). In this form, she usually wears blue dresses with white flowers as accessories. Her body is cold to the touch; not warm, not even just average, actually cold. Not too much is known about her, but what is known is that she is a bit of a wanderer, and that she's a strange Daemon that acts more like she were Fae than anything else; unless responding to perceived offenses, many of the things she does are without any real malice, and are simply to entertain herself or otherwise alleviate boredom. She loves playing games or taking challenges, but she absolutely will cheat at them when possible if not kept in check somehow.
One of her favorite kinds of entertainment, however, is one that most would find generally unpleasant. She is not actively malicious as she doesn't seek to harm or kill others, but when anyone tries to contract with her, she loves twisting words and their meanings to trick them with into agreeing to one thing while thinking that they're agreeing to another; a mage seeking more power might instead see that power granted to their child or children instead, but it would also be done in such a way that they become something that's only partly human or even barely human at all—Desidera herself is a good example of this. Malvarma typically does not immediately consider how her actions would impact them; why would she? they're still alive, so it's fine. Typically, but not always, Malvarma's amusement is considered payment enough for any contracts that she deliberately twists into something else, and rarely will she make any additional demands of the contractor or those who were affected by the contract itself.
She does not consider any of this to be a harmful act; granting power to others with no real strings attached is totally harmless and a pretty good deal, right? Right?? Well, it's technically harmless if you can keep your newly-acquired Daemonic side under control, but that's your problem, not hers. (Though she would be interested in seeing how you manage it.)
Her contracts are entirely verbal, making her an excellent example of GET THAT SHIT IN WRITING AND DOUBLE-CHECK IT YOU DUMBASS, but her insistence that she doesn't really need anything in return for her services (with a unspoken "I find doing this kind of thing really funny and honestly that's good enough") does make it awfully tempting to just go for it.
Due to how her actions don't really benefit herself in the typical sense but can still potentially be seen as beneficial to the people she deals with, Malvarma's reputation among Daemons that know of her is probably a bit weird, if not somewhat negative at times, due to a perception that what she does amounts to gifting rather than any real sort of exchange like most would expect there to have been. There are some, however, that realize why she does what she does and can respect the fact that she knows what she wants and has figured out a way to get it.
If she is provoked into fighting, she has uncommon strength and sharp reflexes, and wields a variety of powerful ice magic. She also has the ability to manipulate shadows to a very considerable degree, but unlike Desidera she also has the power to create shadows as well, rather than needing to take control of existing ones. She is susceptible to fire, resistant to wind and darkness, and largely unharmed by ice although it can still potentially hinder her movement.
On the subject of Nightfall, she is presently neutral, but is actually likely to side with Earth, considering it the more-interesting side.
